Christmas Poetry Exchange

British film critic/poet Richard Jack Smith and I write film poems and include them in our movie reviews. So it’s not surprising that we send each other poems instead of Christmas cards during the holiday season. Below are excerpts from this year’s exchange.

To Richard from Betty Jo

You see a film with poet’s eye.

So your reviews poetify.

In each review your language soars.

And reading them opens new doors.

Thanks for all the great work you do.

Loud Christmas Cheers, Richard, to you!

To Betty Jo from Richard

An imaginative lady of the arts

Shaping hopes, dreams and hearts.

You make these times better

Through mastery of the letter.

A soul inside the celluloid

Knowing things to like or avoid.

Artist Extraordinaire

She is an artist extraordinaire.

Multi-talented and quite rare.

Painting, writing and poetry

filled with heart and humanity.

Judy Joy Jones, a toast to you!

And thanks for the great work you do.

Your art shines with a future glow.

That means your fame will grow and grow

Meryl Streep & James Corden: A Dynamic Duo

Streep and Corden can steal the show.

See “The Prom” and you will know.

Together they sing and they dance.

They each are funny with a glance.

Streep plays a diva with great flair.

Corden even jumps in the air.

When one of their plays gets bad press,

They start a project to impress.

They try to help a gay girl teen

whose prom was cancelled. Oh that’s mean!

Broadway actors take on PTA.

But will they win and save the day?

No matter how the film turns out

you’ll enjoy its musical clout.

Santa and the Virus

To all the Santas out there, this poem is for you.

December with its winter woes

gets much better as Santa goes

around the world spreading good cheer.

Will he be able to this year

or will the virus strike him down?

Don’t worry, folks, erase that frown.

To make sure he’s up to this task,

Santa’s wearing a Christmas mask.
