J-Lo Charms Us in Rom-Com Musical

My favorite Jennifer Lopez movies are Selena, Enough, and Shall We Dance? But now I am happy to add Netflix's Marry Me to that list. As entertainment goes, this offering wowed me. I’m an incurable romantic, so the pairing of Lopez and Owen Wilson pleased me. And getting to see the ultra-talented Lopez sing and dance on screen made me very happy indeed. So, of course, I was motivated to write the poem below.

A math teacher and music star

look at each other from afar.

He’s at concert and she sees him.

“Marry Me,” she shouts on a whim.

Emotional, about to cry,

the star is counting on this guy

to help her through a real bad patch

although they don’t look like a match.

Owen Wilson and J-Lo click.

They play the couple in this flick.

Their ups and downs are fun to see.

We love them in this new movie.

Choosing Wilson for co-star here

is a decision we can cheer.

He makes us laugh and care throughout.

He fits his role. There is no doubt.

J-Lo dances and also sings.

Her costumes shine with sparkly things.

Her acting charms us from the start,

as superstar with a big heart.

Ode to Oscar's Ten Best Picture Nominees

As Poet Laureate of the Movies, it was my pleasure to write a poem about Oscar’s Ten Best Picture nominees that were announced this week. Sorry to say my favorites didn’t make the list. I was disappointed at the omission of great films like Cyrano, Passing, In the Heights, Lamb, Vivo, The Ice Road, The Harder They Fall, The Tender Bar, and Rita Moreno’s wonderful documentary.

Below is my poem.

Ten films are up for Picture Best.

Which one will rise above the rest?

“The Power of the Dog” looks fine,

Though not a favorite of mine.

But “Belfast” boasts an Irish glow,

and stars so many that we know.

Then “West Side Story” filled with dance

won once before, so has a chance

There’s “Dune,” a sci-fi adventure

with lots of fans, you can be sure.

 “Licorice Pizza” don’t forget.

Nostalgia bubbles up in it.

A sleeper film like “Coda” could

brighten up every neighborhood.

Emotions soar in “Drive My Car.”

“Don’t Look Up” scares us from afar.

 “King Richard” honors father’s plan

for daughters who adore this man.

 “Nightmare Alley” a moral treat

with cinematic style to beat.

So pick the winner, if you please.

And congrats to the nominees!

Soul Mates

Two true soul mates drifted apart.

Each one suffered a broken heart.

For many years we hid our pain.

To meet again – what could we gain?

Surprisingly, our love lived on.

Faults forgiven and blaming gone.

So how did all this come to be?

We reveal in a true story.

IT HAD TO BE US, our memoir,

filled with romance and fun galore.
