Is Meryl Streep from the Future?

Actress Meryl Streep shines in her new film Ricki and the Flash. As a a rock-and-roll singer, she shows off her considerable vocal talent. Is there any part she can't play? Known for being a perfectionist in preparing for her roles, Streep also boasts the ability to master any accent. No wonder she's earned three Oscars and nineteen Academy Award nominations. Her remarkable film career even inspired Afterbirth Monkey, an Astoria based comedy band, to come up with an amusing song titled "Is Meryl Streep from the Future?"

Clearly, it is time for Movie Addict Headquarters to do a show about Streep. So on August 25th, I will be sharing my review of  Ricki and the Flash, and film critic Mack Bates has agreed to discuss Streep's illustrious acting career. Mack, a popular guest on Movie Addict Headquarters, has written freelance articles for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and serves as a staff blogger for Milwaukee Magazine’s official film blog. He also received a local Emmy for his work on The Robert and Rosie Show.

“Meryl Streep: Her Films and Performances” airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, August 25, 2015. During the live show, listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a chat. An archived segment will also be available.

Movie Tunes and National Dance Day

I had such fun putting together the Movie Addict Headquarters show this week! On our Tuesday episode, which aired on BlogTalkRadio, we helped listeners get ready for National Dance Day (July 25) by playing clips of performances by Gene Kelly, James Cagney, Lucille Ball, Lily James, Dick Van Dyke, Lucie Arnaz, Julie Andrews and more. Tap, rumba, waltz, musical comedy, burlesque, ballet and other dance styles on film are included in this special episode. The show is available now for your listening pleasure. Just click on the link at the end of this post.

National Dance Day was created to raise awareness about and encourage Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health. Back in 2010, Eleanor Holmes Norton introduced the resolution in Congress, and the last Saturday in July was designated as an “unofficial” national holiday by Nigel Lythgoe, co-creator of “So You Think You Can Dance” and co-president of the Dizzy Feet Foundation.

This Movie Addict Headquarters episode salutes dancing from such films as Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Tap, Cinderella, Addicted to Love, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dance Girl Dance, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Make Your Move, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Band Wagon and Footloose.

C’mon --- let’s dance!!!

A Terrific Madeline Kahn Biography

I think Madeline Kahn ranks as one of the greatest funny ladies of the silver screen. Thanks to the magic of movies, it is still a treat to watch Madeline combine her impressive singing ability and unique flair for comedy in such iconic films as Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes’ Smarter Brother. I am happy to report that a biography of this beloved actress has been released recently. And it is terrific!

With Madeline Kahn: Being the Music – A Life, author William V. Madison gives readers a riveting behind-the-scenes look at Madeline’s personal and professional life. His well-researched and fascinating book tells an inspiring story about the persistence and dedication of an insecure but highly talented artist. It will be my pleasure to talk with Madison during our next Movie Addict Headquarters show on BlogTalkRadio. The episode airs at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, June 23, 2015. An archived segment will be available after the live show.

George Bettinger, from The Mom & Pop Shop Show on DreamStream Radio, has agreed to co-host with me. And Nikki Starr, our producer extraordinaire, will be helping with the Chat Room. We should have a great time!

Something Is Afoot!

When I was a teenager back in days of yore, it was such a treat to watch all those wonderful Sherlock Holmes movies starring Basil Rathbone. I am still an avid Sherlock fan, so I feel excited about the opportunity to talk with Ed Fitzelle concerning Sherlock Holmes movies and the actors who have portrayed this fictional master detective.  Ed, a Sherlock expert, will be dropping by Movie Addict HQ to discuss this fun topic.

Did you know that more than 70 actors have appeared in upwards of 200 cinema projects featuring this popular character? The latest actor signing on as Sherlock is Sir Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes, a film scheduled for release in 2015. McKellen adds his name to an impressive list including such diverse actors as Basil Rathbone, Jeremy Brett, Charlton Heston, Michael Caine, Christopher Plummer, Nicol Williamson, John Cleese, Douglas Fairbanks, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Downey, Jr.

Ed Fitzelle’s company, EverythingSherlockHolmes.com, is a portal designed to help viewers enjoy Sherlock Holmes. The site contains 40 hours of moving image content (movies and TV series) plus a news section with reports relating to Sherlock as well as an international events calendar focused on Sherlock-related events around the world.

This interview airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. During the live show, listeners are invited to call in and to participate in a chat. An archived segment is also available.

Tippi Hedren and The Birds

Actress Tippi Hedren talks about her scary experiences while filming The Birds, one of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thrillers, in a candid interview to be revisited on the October 21st Movie Addict HQ show. This talented actress, who won a Golden Globe for her work in The Birds, also reminisces about playing opposite Sean Connery in Hitchcock’s disturbing Marnie as well as about working with the great Charlie Chaplin.

Among Hedren’s non-Hitchcock films are such offerings as Chaplin’s The Countess from Hong Kong plus Citizen Ruth, I Heart Huckabees, Pacific Heights, Jayne Mansfield’s Car, Free Samples, Return to Babylon and Roar, a movie Hedren produced and starred in with her daughter, Melanie Griffith. Her upcoming film credits include roles in The Ghost and the Whale and Lizzie’s World: The Secret of the Magic Truth. Hedren has appeared in numerous TV shows including Cougar, Raising Hope, The 4400, Hart to Hart and Murder, She Wrote.

Several charitable and humanitarian causes have benefited from Hedren’s support. She has served as a volunteer International Relief Coordinator for “Food for Hungry” and traveled worldwide to set up “relief programs following earthquakes, hurricanes, famine and war.” She is an avid supporter of the ROAR Foundation and the Shambala Preserve.

Hedren’s many awards for her acting and humanitarian efforts include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a Life Achievement Award from Cinemalia (French Film Festival), the Bahai Faith Humanitarian Award, and a “Woman of Vision” Honor from Women in Film and Video.

“Actress Tippi Hedren and The Birds” airs on BlogTalkRadio at 4 p.m. Eastern Time (1 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, October 21, 2014. During the live show, listeners are invited to participate in a Chat. An archived segment will also be available.

So Many Movies, So Little Time

On Tuesday, September 3rd, noted film critics Mack Bates and A.J. Hakari drop by Movie Addict HQ to preview upcoming Fall movies. Mack and A.J. will help listeners make choices among the over 100 films vying for their box office dollars this Fall. Both critics are candid, informative and great fun to listen to! Award-winning critic Mack Bates writes freelance articles for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and serves as a staff blogger for Milwaukee Magazine’s official film blog. He recently received a local Emmy for his work on the The Robert and Rosie Show, one of the projects he worked on with Kyle Olson for the Milwaukee Summer Entertainment Camp. A.J. Hakari, aka The Mad Movie Man, has contributed movie reviews to a variety of sites including ReelTalk Movie Reviews, Classic Movie Guide, Review Express, Terror Tube and his own popular blog Cineslice. Exploring Incidental Gold Movies

The Shadow, The Miracle Worker, He Walked by Night. What do these films have in common? They each made it to a list of 75 movies called “Incidental Gold” by Richard Jack Smith, an impressive film critic who lives in South Wales and contributes reviews to the ReelTalk Movie Reviews website. Richard will discuss some of the motion pictures included in his list and why they were selected during his June 25th interview on Movie Addict HQ. Award-winning critic Mack Bates has agreed to co-host this enlightening episode. Mack writes freelance articles for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and serves as a staff blogger for Milwaukee Magazine’s official film blog. Richard and Mack both know their stuff where movies are concerned, so this show should be a real treat for film fans.

Fun with Rita Moreno and Robert Osborne

What a treat it was for BlogTalkRadio listeners when the great Rita Moreno -- who’s quite the Diva -- called in during our Movie Addict Headquarters SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN 60th Anniversary show last month and stayed for the entire time! I had no idea this was the FIRST time Robert Osborne and Rita had met each other and talked together, so I pretty much gave them free reign for most of the episode, and they were fascinating.

It was not the show I had planned, but sometimes opportunities like this are too hard to resist. Robert is the wonderful host of Turner Classic Movies, and Rita (who is an Oscar-Tony-Grammy-Emmy-winner) played Zelda in the film being honored. My decision to just let them talk together turned out to be a good one. Here are comments posted by listeners:

Absolutely terrific show! No network production could have been done any better. – Denny Reese from Wandering Press

Perfection! – Vicki S. Nikolaidis, Host at The Vicki Chats, Global Perspectives

Fabulous show! – Olivia Wilder, BTR Featured Host

Great show! – Nancy Lombardo, Actress/Comedian

We really appreciate those enthusiastic responses. Thanks also to Robert Osborne and Rita Moreno for being such terrific guests and to everyone who helped with this episode, including film historian James Colt Harrison, Diana Saenger from Classic Movie Guide, producer Nikki Starr, and Neil Haley, our production assistant.

'Water for Elephants' Preview

On April 22, Water for Elephants parades into our nation’s multiplexes. Based on Sara Gruen’s wonderful novel, this film boasts a star-studded cast including Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, and Christoph Waltz. If ever a book cried out for filming, it’s this one. In fact, not since my husband and I read the first Harry Potter book have we been so eager to see the movie version of an author’s work. We were not disappointed with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone -- and we hope the film treatment of Water for Elephants does justice to this exciting and romantic story set in the circus world of the 1930s.

The story contains lots of cinematic potential, especially considering its colorful characters -- including a brave and long-suffering elephant named Rosie -- as well as suspenseful situations in the big tent and on trains as the circus travels from town to town. Pattinson (the guy from “Twilight” movies) portrays Jacob, a young veterinarian student who drops out of college after his parents die in a tragic accident. When Jacob finds himself signed on as a circus veterinarian, he falls deeply in love with Marlena (Witherspoon), the gorgeous lady who performs with the circus horses. Marlena’s sadistic hubby (Waltz, the ruthless Nazi colonel in Inglorious Basterds ) stands in the way of true love, so the plot thickens.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Water for Elephants. It’s probably the kind of film you must see on the big screen.

Thanks to Nikki Starr for recommending Sara Gruen's book to me -- and to Diana Saenger for mentioning it on our Movie Addict Headquarters "Page to Screen" episode.

We highly recommend Denise Cassino to any authors or wannabe authors who want help in bringing their work to the attention of readers.

She combines creativity with professionalism in her timely and artistic approach to book promotion. To find out more about Denise’s services, go to www.wizardlywebdesigns.com.

Time Flies When You're Having Fun

I just realized that our Movie Addict Headquarters show has been running for three years now on BlogTalkRadio. So it’s true about time flying when you’re having fun! The show debuted on June 5, 2007, with a 15-minute commentary about Kevin Costner’s thriller Mr. Brooks.

Originally, I intended the format to include a weekly rant or rave about one current theatrical release. But things changed rapidly, and MAHQ has become a 45-minute talk show featuring spirited conversations with all kinds of film personnel. And, thankfully, it’s not just me doing the interviewing. The current MAHQ gang includes our savvy co-host Jazz Shaw and our producer extraordinaire Nikki Starr as well as frequent assistance from such respected movie critics as Mad Movie Man A.J. Hakari, entertainment journalist Diana Saenger, and film historian James Colt Harrison.

During the past three years, many fascinating guests have visited MAHQ, including Debbie Reynolds, Fred Willard, Cloris Leachman, Julie Benz, Joe Mantegna, Michael Emerson, Tippi Hedren, William Sanderson, Todd Fisher, Tanna Frederick, Henry Jaglom, Tim Reid, Amin Matalqa, Chris Lemmon, Nancy Lombardo, David Zayas, Christine Evangelista, Todd Langen, John P. McCarthy, Rosemary Gore, Misha Zubarev, Lorna Luft, Anya Monzikova, Michelle Monaghan, Nell Minow, Tim Daly, Tony Curtis, Barry Bostwick, Alan Menken, V. Ulea, Robert Osborne, Sally Kirkland, Larry Manetti, Ron Masak, Kherington Payne, Cammie King Conlon, David Worth, Gary King, Ravi Godse, Steven Bauer, Tony Luke, James Reynolds, Margaret Avery, Phil Hall, Legacy Perez, and Jason Connery. We’ve learned a lot about the movies from our wonderful guests!

Much of the fun at MAHQ comes from people who sign up for the Chat during the live shows. Our perceptive chatters have offered interesting comments and questions that enhance each show.

Thanks so much to founder Alan Levy for this almost miraculous technology and to all the folks at BlogTalkRadio for their splendid support. Special thanks to A.J. Daniels for permission to play “If You Knew How Much I Love You” as our outro music and to Will Griffiths for the show introduction.

Here’s a BIG SHOUT OUT to all our loyal listeners!

It’s been a great three years for a movie addict like me.

Chick Flicks -- Who Needs 'Em?

"Sex and the City: The Movie" earned over fifty million dollars at the box office during the past weekend. Some critics are calling it a “female empowerment event” rather than a movie. They might be right. At the screening I attended, applause rang out every time something good happened, and most viewers (almost entirely women, of course) clapped enthusiastically as the end credits rolled. Audience reaction during the latest Indiana Jones adventure seemed tame compared to the warm reception for this popular chick flick.

Nowadays only a few films are made with women’s interests in mind, so when something like "Sex and the City" shows up, we turn out to see it in droves. We love a good romantic comedy like "My Best Friend’s Wedding," an emotional tear-jerker like "Terms of Endearment" or a female buddy movie like "Thelma & Louise." Filmmakers should take notice of this fact. Wouldn’t it be great if they decided to make more quality films that appeal to women instead of trying to please teenage boys and their dates so much?

On Tuesday, June 3, noted film critic Rebecca Murray will join Nikki Starr and me on “Movie Addict Headquarters” for a discussion of "Sex and the City" and other chick flicks. Rebecca reviews films for About.com, a top ten Internet site which is part of the New York Times. She also conducts celebrity interviews and covers the Academy Awards as well as countless movie premieres and other Hollywood special events.

This BlogTalkRadio show airs at 4 p.m. Eastern Time, 1 p.m. Pacific Time, and an archived segment will also be available. During the live broadcast, listeners are invited to call in with their comments or questions and to participate in the chat. What’s your favorite chick flick? Which actors and actresses perform the best in films of this genre? Did "Sex and the City: The Movie" live up to your expectations? We’d love to hear from you.
